The ageing foot: physiology, morphology and biomechanics

Podiatrists are experts in treating the ageing foot. But what does the research tell us, and does it match with what is commonly understood by clinicians? In this presentation we will take a deep dive into the latest research to understand the changes that occur as the foot ages. There will be a focus on the way in which the physiology, the morphology or shape of the foot and biomechanics of the foot and lower limb change with age.

Dr Andrew Buldt is a lecturer within the Discipline of Podiatry in the School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport at La Trobe University, Melbourne. He was awarded his PhD in 2016 for his project that investigated the relationship between foot posture and lower limb and foot biomechanics during walking. His research now focuses the osteoarthritis in the foot and how it affect the overall foot and lower limb, gait and the ability to undertake functional tasks. In addition to research, Dr Buldt is passionate about working with student podiatrist and nurturing the next generation of clinicians. He also continues to work in a private clinic in Melbourne.
