DR JILL HALSTEAD

PRESENTING: THURSDAY 15TH JULY, 2021

PRESENTATION TITLE:
Foot and Ankle Pain: When to look beyond the foot.

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION:
Clinically I have spent nearly 20 years trying to understand if someone's foot / ankle pain is part of a local pattern of disease and whether the condition may respond to targeted treatments.  Through working in senior hospital and community settings, I have seen a lot of complex cases and I would like to share some of these scenarios when ‘simple’ foot and ankle pain turns out to be something else. For attendees I hope these cases will provide you with examples of when to ask key questions, raise early suspicions and provide treatment approaches that can ensure you signpost, prevent delay to treatment and build confidence and trust with your clients/patients.

BIO:

Jill is a Podiatrist who has worked in MSK and rheumatology clinics since graduating in 2003; including the NHS and private practice settings. Jill has built an academic career alongside this and first joined the Foot and Ankle Studies in Rheumatology (FASTER) in 2003 as a research intern examining the alteration of foot kinematics with an orthotic device. Since then Jill has worked with key members of the group to undertake her master’s thesis to explore the magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of osteoarthritis and neuroarthropathy.  In 2008, Jill joined the research team full time as an Arthritis Research Doctoral candidate. Jill submitted her PhD thesis titled the medication of bones stress with functional foot orthoses in 2013. Since then Jill has coordinated a large inflammatory arthritis cohort study, led a feasibility study of foot orthoses in the treatment of midfoot osteoarthritis, produced the Foot Osteoarthritis MRI Score and supported the Leeds Osteoarthritis Foot Study alongside Dr John Arnold. As part of the foot research group and Co-founder of MSK:UK, Jill provides a wide range of professional courses and updates in the field of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.

Research interests:
Jill's main research areas are prodromal and established midfoot OA examining the imaging biomarkers and mechanical phenotypes to understand disease progression and stratification of treatment response. Jill is interested in the mechanism of foot orthoses to modify foot function and potentially disease outcomes. Jill also has an interest in the lower limb multi-joint osteoarthritis and works closely with the Leeds Experimental Osteoarthritis Treatment Centre and Leeds Biomedical Research Centre.
