Optimising strength-endurance testing of the calf muscles

The calf raise test (or heel-rise test) is often used in clinic and research to quantify the strength-endurance of the triceps surae muscles. However, it has long been known that using the number of repetitions completed as main outcome measure is not as sensitive as quantifying peak height achieved and total work performed. In this session, A/Prof Kim Hebert-Losier will discuss her years of experience and multiple research she has conducted using the calf raise test, introduce the mobile Calf Raise application, and cover considerations in terms of test parameters and what should be considered "normal" to optimise the use and interpretation of this test.

Biography

I am an expert in human movement, sports performance, injury prevention, and evidence-based practice, and I love running!

My background in physiotherapy and internationally acquired expertise in human movement and sport science drive my research outputs and interests. I work in inter-disciplinary teams and collaboratively with end-uses to provide empirical evidence to inform clinical practice in health and sport. I am a forerunner in the use of 3D motion capture outdoors, being an Invited Speaker on this topic in several countries, including Australia, Japan, and China. I am an internationally recognised contributor to research on calf muscle function, injury prevention in sport, and running biomechanics and footwear.

I have led and contributed to a range of national and international research teams as evidenced by my scholarship and research activities. I am uniquely positioned to add value within such teams given my clinical experience and vast international postdoctoral training in biomechanics and sports. Most of my research outputs stem from inter-disciplinary efforts and collaborations with practitioners and academics in health and sport, including sport organisations, government bodies, physiotherapists, medical doctors, physiologists, coaches, statisticians, trainers, and athletes. I am especially proud to have developed the Calf Raise mobile application to help clinicians and researchers better quantify heel rise test outcomes.
