Presentation: The role of health and exercise professionals implementing injury prevention programs in community sport.

After the lecture and workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify the role of health, sport, and science professionals, including podiatrists in preventing lower-limb injuries in community sport.

  • Describe the key components of an injury prevention program and be able to access evidence-based resources for different sports.

  • Identify the contextual factors that may influence injury prevention implementation strategies.

  • Practice delivering an injury prevention program for a community football team.

Presented on: Thursday 22nd June

Workshop: How you can implement injury prevention programs in community sport

A hands on session in which you will discover more about the effect of compression and the impact of the shape of the foot and leg on the pressure generated on the surface and in the tissues, and through this better appreciate the potential problems when the pressure is not correct.  You will have an opportunity to see if the pressures you think are applied are real and if you have a good pressure gradient to encourage lymphatic and venous outflow and thus optimal foot and lower leg health and the best outcomes for the patient.

Biography

Dr Patterson is a physiotherapist and research fellow at the La Trobe University Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre. After working in a variety of public, private, and sports settings, she completed her PhD in 2020, investigating the risk of arthritis at a young age after ACL injury, and how physiotherapist-led interventions can help improve outcomes beyond the typical rehabilitation period. Brooke has sustained an ACL injury herself, played in the first three seasons of the women’s national Australian Football League, and is now a coach. She is coordinating a clinical trial in women’s community Australian football, evaluating if a supported implementation strategy can increase uptake and reduce the risk of serious knee and head injury.
