STREAM: Children & Adolescent Podiatry

Masterclass: Communicating uncertainty in consultations about kids’ chronic pain. A solutions generating workshop

This workshop will provide an opportunity to both learn and be part of some research if you choose. You will be provided with an information form prior. This will enable you to either consent to us collecting your views on kids’ leg pain, or you can attend to listen.

At this workshop, you will hear facts about children’s lower limb pain. Facts such as, there are over 100 childhood conditions resulting in chronic lower limb pain! And others such as how frequently these conditions can present to podiatry practice. You will also learn which conditions have guidelines relating to diagnosis and treatment and recommended outcome measures and how you can access the latest information to use in practice.

Our team is working on addressing knowledge gaps for the conditions without guidelines, or fill the gaps in guidelines relevant to professions who see these children the most. These guidelines take time, so while we do this, we are keen to understand how you deal with uncertainty in practice when faced with children’s chronic lower limb pain, what you say and do. We will use case studies developed by families of children with chronic pain to explore different communication and management approaches. By discussing this as a group, our research team will be taking an action learning approach. We will use the information we generate together to develop free and easily accessible training in pain management, specific to podiatry practice.

Presented on: Saturday 24th June
