Presentation: The patient experience of gout.  

Gout is a painful form of arthritis with significant foot and lower limb involvement. Gout flares impact many aspects of peoples life’s including family, social, physical, and psychological. This presentation will provide an overview of gout, including its pathophysiology and clinical presentation in the lower limb, with a particular focus on the perceptions that people with gout have about their disease and how it is managed.

Workshop: Effective management of gout

Although gout flares may be temporary, gout is a serious long-term condition and effective prevention of gout requires taking long term urate lowering medication. This workshop will unpack common misinformation about the management of gout, so that you can feel confident that you are providing the best possible care and education to your patients.

Biography

Dr Sarah Stewart is a New Zealand registered podiatrist and Senior Lecturer within the School of Clinical Sciences at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) where she teaches in rheumatology, pathology, medical imaging, and musculoskeletal podiatry. Sarah has over 10 years of research experience using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies and has a particular interest in the patient experience of gout. In 2017, Sarah became the third podiatrist in New Zealand to complete a PhD and has since undertaken two funded post-doctoral fellowships – one in AUT’s Health and Rehabilitation Research Institute (2017-2018), and the second in the University of Auckland’s world-renowned Bone and Joint Research Group (2018-2020). Despite being an emerging researcher, Sarah is currently the most published podiatrist in New Zealand, with 50 publications in podiatry and rheumatology related research. Her research portfolio also includes a number of international conference presentations. Sarah is also a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research and regularly reviews manuscripts for other rheumatology journals.
