Podiatrist
Western Bulldogs Football Club, Australian Open, LifeCare Prahran Sports Medicine, Alphington Sports Medicine
Emma’s interactive presentation will discuss the differences you need to consider when working with elite athletes. Hear insights from her first hand experiences of working in the AFL system for a decade and more recently the Australian Open. Emma will dive into what you need to consider when working with elite athletes, collaborating with their multidisciplinary teams, and working in their high performance environments. Thoughts on how we participate as Podiatrists in sport, how we can get more involved in sport, and how we can contribute as a profession in more elite sporting environments will also be explored. This presentation will also include a mock athlete screening scenario which you can use as a take home tool for your own clinical practice.
Now is the time to work towards changing the multidisciplinary sports medicine landscape to include Podiatrists, as involving podiatry skillsets should become standard practice. Growing our professions foothold within elite sport needs to come from the individual podiatrists who aspire to work in sports medicine, hence actively working towards raising the profile of podiatrists in the sports world so our profession can continue to grow its presence.
Presented on: Saturday 2nd March
Emma’s strong interest in clinical sports podiatry came though her own involvement as a competing athlete, originally in track and field sprinting and now in ice hockey. Through being a past athlete herself, and now working with both amateur and professional athletes clinically and in there sporting environments (i.e in their clubs or at their tournaments). Emma has developed a clinical and practical understanding of what the injured athlete needs as part of their treatment and management. As the current Australian Open and Western Bulldogs Football Club consulting podiatrist, past AFLW Academy and Victorian Little Athletics consulting podiatrist, Emma has had an extended history of treating athletes and their injuries that often include taping in the initial acute injury management phase or longer rehabilitation programs. Emma has just finished working major overtime at the Australian Open!
